Well, games started early this morning, but I deferred to sleep in instead of watch Greece and South Korea. Sadly, this was a good idea due to Greece playing like shit and South Korea kicking their asses.
Nigeria v Argentina
Everyone thought Argentina would just run rough-shot over Nigeria, due to Lionel Messi and Carlos Tevez up top. Oddly enough, the only goal came from Heinze: a defender. The Nigerian keeper kept them in the game and continually denied Messi throughout the match.
and the big match of the day: USA v England
The BIGGEST match of the opening round and continually hyped for the past 6 months. England same out strong and struck in the 5th minute, catching the US defense and Rico Clark napping. Capello pulled King in the 31st minute, I mean seriously, he may have had a yellow already, but thats just stupid. Clint Dempsey pulled the US back with a screaming shot and Robert Green just fumbled the save. Through the second half, the US looked like the better team. Altidore almost put the US ahead, but Green got saved by the post.
All in all, a 1-1 tie against England is an amazing result. More to come tomorrow.
